Stuffed Red Dates with Glutinous Rice Balls

Red dates have been used in Chinese medicine for thousands of years to help with insomnia and anxiety. They are an adaptogen which are substances that reduce stress. We were first introduced to this dish when we were in Shanghai a while ago and we fell in love with it. It is not so easy to find this dish in Hong Kong as labor cost is high so restaurant don’t really make it. However, it is super easy to make. It makes a perfect appetizer, snacks or even dessert. As dates are naturally sweet, you can omit the sugar for a healthier version. If you have guests coming over to your house over Chinese New Year, why not impress them with this nutritious and super delicious dish!


  • Red date 20 pcs
  • Glutinous Rice Flour 50g
  • Water (to mix with glutinous rice flour) 45g
  • Rock Sugar 15g
  • Water (to melt rock sugar) 30g


Step 1
Soak red date until soft (around 30 mins)

Step 2
Discard the water and pat dry. Make a vertical slit along one side of the red date and remove the seed.

Step 3
Mix glutinous flour with water and mix into a dough

Step 4
Divide the dough into small balls and shape each of them into bullet shape
Step 5
Stuff the small dough into the red date. Arrange the stuffed dates on a steam-proof dish and steam for 15 mins.

Step 6
Melt rock sugar with water and pour over the red date and steam for another 5 mis.

Tips: There are a few types of red dates in the market. Be sure to get the big one so you can stuff more glutinous rick balls in it to achieve the chewiness!
